چکیده

Byzantine Agreement introduced in [Pease, Shostak, Lamport, 80] is a widely used building block of reliable distributed protocols. It simulates broadcast despite the presence of faulty parties within the network, traditionally using only private unicast links. Under such conditions, Byzantine Agreement requires more than 2/3 of the parties to be compliant. [Fitzi, Maurer, 00], constructed a Byzantine Agreement protocol for any compliant majority based on an additional primitive allowing transmission to any two parties simultaneously. They proposed a problem of generalizing these results to wider channels and fewer compliant parties. We prove that a ⌊2n/h⌋ party channel is necessary and sufficient for implementing n-party broadcast with h compliant parties.

Byzantine Agreement with Bounded Broadcast

Under such conditions, Byzantine Agreement requires more than 2/3 of the parties to be honest. [Fitzi, Maurer, 00], constructed a Byzant...

Asynchronous Byzantine Agreement Protocols

A consensus protocol enables a system of n asynchronous processes, some of them faulty, to reach agreement. Both the processes and the message system are capable of cooperating to prevent the correct processes from reaching decision. A protocol is t-resilient if in the presence of up to t faulty processes it reaches agreement with probability 1. Byzantine processes are faulty processes that can...

On Byzantine Agreement over (2, 3)-Uniform Hypergraphs

In a Byzantine agreement protocol, a synchronous network of n interconnected processes of which t may be faulty, starts with an initial binary value associated with each process; after exchanging messages, all correct processes must agree on one of the initial values of the non-faulty processes. If the network consists of only unicast channels (i.e. a 2-uniform hypergraph), then Byzantine agree...

Unconditional Byzantine Agreement for any Number of Faulty Processors

We present the first Byzantine agreement protocol which tolerates any number of maliciously faulty processors without relying on computational assumptions (such as the unforgeability of digital signatures). Our protocol needs reliable broadcast and secret channels in a precomputation phase. For a security parameter σ, it achieves Byzantine agreement with an error probability of at most 2–σ, whe...

Fault Tolerance in Networks of Bounded Degree

Achieving processor cooperation in the presence of faults is a major problem in distributed systems. Popular paradigms such as Byzantine agreement have been studied principally in the context of a complete network. Indeed, Dolev [J. Algorithms, 3 (1982), pp. 14-30] and Hadzilacos [Issues of Fault Tolerance in Concurrent Computations, Ph.D. thesis, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, 1984] have s...
